Benavente, a certified member of the Generation of 98, achieved minor fame in 1892, when he published a collection of poems and a book based on women’s letters, which he probably wrote himself. Later that year, he was recognized as a dramatist for a series of plays published under the title El teatro fanta´stico (The Fantastic Theater). El nido ajeno (Another’s Nest), performed in 1894, did not get good reviews, but was popular nonetheless. It was Gente conocida, usually translated as High Society, but closer to Celebrities, that sealed his fame in 1896.

Returning to Caracas, he joined the revolutionary movement of 1810 that expelled Venezuela’s Spanish governor and declared the nation’s independence in 1811. One of Bolı´ var’s main assignments at this time was as envoy to Great Britain. He failed in his assignment when the British promised only neutrality, but not the aid the revolutionaries needed. By 1814 the Spaniards had re-conquered Venezuela. Bolı´ var fled to Curacao, organized an army, landed in Venezuela’s northern coast, and reclaimed his beloved Caracas from Spain.
