However, it is now realized that musculoskeletal pain does not necessarily originate at the site where it is felt, but is referred there via the central nervous system from some focus of neural hyperactivity – now known as a trigger point – that is often situated some distance away. Therefore, rather than inserting a needle into the area where pain is felt, the pain is more likely to be relieved if the needle is inserted into the tissues overlying the trigger point for the purpose of stimulating Adelta nerve fibres in its vicinity.
