The characteristics of prisonlike schools consist of metal detectors, scanners, barbed wire fences, armed guards, police officers, principals with baseball bats, no natural light in the corridors, hard and dull surfaces, metal grates that cover each window, cage-like structures that “fall proof” the stairwells, bars on the windows, overcrowding, monitoring systems, and video cameras.
