However, action remained at a rather low level until the energizing influence of Charles Lindbergh’s solo flight across the Atlantic. Lindbergh’s feat fanned the flames of aviation enthusiasm all over the United States.

Therefore, another important part of the history of this pioneering era is the story, first, of how some cities established airports in the absence of enabling legislation and, second, of early state actions allowing for municipal airports. Cities, States, and Airports When the Post Office and the Air Service tried to recruit cities to build airports, few responded. For one thing, simple as they were (still often open fields with perhaps a single hangar—only a few airports, even as of 1926, had lighting) the early airports cost money.
